Empowering Second Chances: The NAACP & Walmart Scholarship for Returning Citizens

2021 HISTORY

The NAACP, in partnership with Walmart, is committed to breaking down barriers that prevent returning citizens from accessing education and economic opportunities. The criminal justice system has long produced inequitable outcomes for people of color, leading to lasting impacts on individuals, families, and communities. Many formerly incarcerated individuals face significant challenges in securing employment, education, and housing, making reentry into society an uphill battle. By investing in education, we can help change these outcomes and create pathways to success.

Through the Empowering a Better Tomorrow scholarship, powered by Walmart, we are providing critical support to returning citizens who are committed to furthering their education and rebuilding their futures. This historic initiative will award 20 scholarships of $5,000 each, totaling $100,000 in direct educational assistance. The scholarship is designed for individuals who have demonstrated leadership, a commitment to positive change, and a desire to give back to their communities. By removing financial barriers, we aim to empower recipients with the skills and knowledge needed to secure sustainable employment and long-term success.

The NAACP remains dedicated to advocating for policies and programs that promote racial equity within the criminal justice system. By working with corporate partners, policymakers, and community organizations, we strive to reduce incarceration rates, eliminate bias, and create opportunities for economic mobility. Investing in returning citizens is not just about second chances—it’s about strengthening communities and ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
